Metal Building Framing Types & Systems
Explore Framing Types for Custom Metal Buildings
MBSDirect offers Pre-engineered Metal buildings in two different framing structural framing types.
Rigid Framed Buildings
Rigid frame buildings utilize solid I-beam moment frame construction consisting of steel columns and rafters that are bolted together to create a durable and highly efficient structural system. These buildings incorporate Z-purlins in the roof and Z-shaped wall girts to provide additional strength and support throughout the structure.
Multiple bracing options are available, including cable bracing, threaded rod bracing, wind posts, and portal frames, allowing each building to be engineered for specific loading and design requirements.
Main structural members are available with either gray primer or red oxide primer finishes, while light gauge purlins and girts can be supplied in red oxide primer or pre-galvanized finishes for enhanced corrosion resistance.
Rigid frame buildings can be designed from 20 feet wide up to 600 feet wide with virtually unlimited building lengths and roof slopes ranging from 0.25:12 up to 6:12 pitch. Additional customization options include canopies, roof extensions, lean-tos, inset bays, and specialized framing for large openings such as bi-fold doors, hydraulic doors, and large aircraft hangar doors. For larger facilities, clearspan designs are available to maximize uninterrupted interior space, while optional interior columns can also be incorporated when desired.
Light Gauge Framing
Light gauge cold-formed framing is an ideal solution for mini storage structures due to its strength, durability, and cost efficiency. Manufactured from precision-engineered galvanized steel, cold-formed framing is offered in red oxide or pre-galvanized finishes, provides excellent structural integrity while remaining lightweight and is easy to install.
Its resistance to warping, rot, termites, and moisture makes it especially well-suited for long-term storage applications requiring minimal maintenance. The versatility of cold-formed steel allows for efficient layouts, clear-span capabilities, and customizable unit configurations to maximize rentable space. Additionally, the non-combustible nature of steel framing enhances fire resistance and overall building performance, making it a reliable and economical choice for modern mini storage facilities.
